◉ Mikel Arteta bemoaned Arsenal’s lack of luck after their Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool (2-0), leaving Arsenal gunning for a return to winning ways against Burnley to put that disappointment behind them. History would suggest Arsenal will be luckier on Sunday, having only lost once to Burnley in the last 18 league meetings - although that loss was in this fixture last season.
◉ A repeat of that would not only be harmful to Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League push, but it would also mark the first time since 1962 the ‘Gunners’ have lost their first two home league games in a calendar year! Yet the prospects of that appear slim - especially if Arsenal replicate their home results against the other three sides in the Premier League’s (PL) bottom four, whom they beat ‘to nil’.
◉ Relegation fears, ownership worries, an injury ravaged squad and Arsenal being able to water the grass - things aren’t looking good for Burnley at the moment. Two consecutive PL postponements prior to Sunday’s game means by the time Burnley take to the field at the Emirates, they will have at least three games in hand on the three sides directly above them in the table - yet it’s points Sean Dyche so desperately craves.
◉ Trips to the capital have proved fruitful for Burnley of late though, winning five of their last nine PL games in London (D1, L3), after winning just three of their prior 30 such games (D4, L23). Yet any confidence gained from that record is surely quashed by the fact the ‘Clarets’ are winless in 11 PL away games (D4, L7) - averaging a mere 0.73 goals per game across that period.
◉ Players to watch: Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette has enjoyed facing Burnley at the Emirates, registering four goal involvements (G2, A2) in four personal home H2Hs. Meanwhile, goal-shy Burnley may look to Jay Rodriguez for inspiration, but he hasn’t scored a PL goal since February.
◉ Hot stat: No side has taken less PL corners than Burnley this season (77).
Arsenal starting lineup:
Ramsdale; Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney; Lokonga, Odegaard; Saka, Smith Rowe, Martinelli; Lacazette
Burnley starting lineup:
Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Cork, Westwood, Brownhill; Lennon, Rodriguez
Prediction
Arsenal 2-0 Burnley
Whether Burnley's COVID-hit contingent are ready to return or not, their lack of recent action could work against them, especially versus an Arsenal side more determined than ever to pick up their first win of 2022.
Dyche will certainly instruct his side to expose Arsenal's midfield frailties while the hosts' naughty step remains well-occupied, but the Gunners' bright, youthful attacking forces should propel their side to a much-needed three points.
