Match Preview

◉ Having led their match against Gabon for over an hour, conceding a last minute equaliser meant Burkina Faso required the lottery of a penalty shootout to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). That eventual victory made it two losses across their last ten matches in the AFCON finals (W5, D3), showing they’re no pushovers on the continent's biggest stage.
◉ The ‘Stallions’ will be looking to gallop towards their third semi-final appearance in their last four AFCON finals here after finishing as runners-up in 2013 and third in 2017. A quarter-final date with Tunisia will spark confidence for the Burkinabé given that they conquered their opponents at this stage of the tournament in 2017 and 1998!
◉ The ‘Eagles of Carthage’ pulled off possibly the upset of the last round, eliminating the previously undefeated Nigerians 1-0, despite several key players plus manager Mondher Kebaier being forced to isolate. Kebaier said that “we trusted the group despite the Covid-19 cases. We didn’t need players but competitors”. Tunisia’s reward is now a third quarter-final appearance across their last four AFCON tournaments.
◉ Tight games have defined AFCON 2021, hence why the first goal could be crucial, particularly given that the team that scored first has won each of Tunisia’s previous 19 internationals. Remarkably, only four of those matches saw both teams score.
◉ Players to watch: Although Burkina Faso’s Bertrand Traoré missed the ninth penalty of this AFCON tournament in the last round, his goal against Gabon means his country have never lost any of the 12 internationals he’s found the net (W11, D1). The same can be said for Tunisia’s hero of the last round Youssef Msakni (G13 - W11, D2), with seven of his last nine international goals arriving after half-time.
◉ Hot stat: Excluding extra-time, there’s been under 2.5 goals in 15 of Tunisia’s last 21 appearances in the AFCON finals.

Burkina Faso starting lineup:
Koffi; Kabore, Tapsoba, Ouattara, Yago; Nikiema, Guira, Sangare; Bande, Ouattara, Traore

Tunisia starting lineup:
Said; Drager, Talbi, Ifa, Haddadi; Skhiri, Laidouni, Slimane; Khazri, Jaziri, Msakni

Prediction

Burkina Faso 1-2 Tunisia
After a shaky run in the group stages, Tunisia will head into the quarter-finals with renewed confidence following their victory over Nigeria. While we expect Burkina Faso to put up a fight, the North African boast a more experienced crop of players and we are tipping them to carry on the momentum from their performance against the Super Eagles and come out victorious on Saturday.
