Match Preview
◉ For the first time since March 2019, Millwall have suffered four consecutive competitive defeats following their midweek 1-0 loss at Blackpool, a run of form that looks to have all-but extinguished any playoff hopes and could even thrust them into a relegation battle if they don’t win soon. Yet as they are amongst the division’s lowest scorers, that could be a challenge unless they improve on their average of 1.04 goals scored per league game this term.
◉ With 58% of their Championship points won at home, the ‘Lions’ have been a fiercer proposition at The Den this term, but no clean sheet in four home Championship fixtures (W1, D2, L1) highlights the need for more goals. They’ll be hoping that West Bromwich Albion’s first win here since 1987 last term was a one-off, and curiously the last four H2Hs they hosted produced exactly two goals!
◉ West Brom will have every intention of making sure that 2-0 triumph wasn’t an anomaly as they chase a return to the Premier League, especially after missing the chance to make up ground when losing 2-0 to Preston North End on Wednesday. Having now won just one of their last six league matches (D2, L3), Valérien Ismaël’s side are at risk of falling out of the top six for the first time since August.
◉ Poor away form has hindered them with just one Championship win on the road since September (D2, L6), which includes failing to score in six of their last seven such fixtures. At least the ‘Baggies’ have made teams work hard for their points by not conceding before the 55th minute in any of their last five league away games.
◉ Players to watch: Benik Afobe has netted during the first half in two of Millwall’s last four matches, while five of Callum Robinson’s six competitive goals for West Brom this term came between half-time and the 70th minute.
◉ Hot streak: West Brom haven’t netted before half-time in any of their last seven Championship fixtures (HT: D5, L2).
Millwall starting lineup:
Bialkowski; Hutchinson, Cooper, M. Wallace; McNamara, Evans, Mitchell, Malone; Burke, Afobe, Bennett
West Bromwich Albion starting lineup:
Button; Ajayi, Bartley, Clarke; Furlong, Mowatt, Livermore, Townsend; Diangana, Grant; Robinson
Prediction
Millwall 0-0 West Bromwich Albion
All of the signs point towards this game being a low-scoring affair. Both sides have strong defences but are feeble in attack, while their recent form means neither team will be particularly full of confidence. We are predicting a goalless stalemate.
